Recently leaked documents revealed that the NSA has paid the British to spy American citizens to circumvent US law.
In a shocking revelation courtesy of Edward Snowden it has now been revealed that the US has been paying the British for their intelligence services. This includes using the British to spy on American citizens because the NSA is regulated by US law, supposedly to prevent the spy agency from spying on ordinary Americans. This is a bombshell on multiple levels. First, because of what we already mentioned and second, because the British are revealed in the documents to be keenly aware that they are the junior partner in the relationship. In other words they readily acknowledge that they are providing a service to a paying client. Check out these inflammatory quotes below and then head over to http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/aug/01/nsa-paid-gchq-spying-edward-snowden for the whole story.
“We both accept and accommodate NSA’s different way of working,” the document said. “We are less constrained by NSA’s concerns about compliance.”
You have to love the fighting spirit of rural America when you hear news like that out of Deer Trail, Colorado where officials are debating whether or not to issue permits to shoot down drones.
“Officials from Deer Trail, Colo., are thinking about issuing $25 hunting licenses to shoot down drones. The town would even go further and award $100 to someone with a license who could provide proof that he shot down the drone”
Needless to say the Feds were not real happy about the idea of citizens attempting to down one of their high priced drones. The FAA pleaded with the public not to shoot at the drones. Officials from Deer Creek responded by saying that “The FAA doesn’t have the power to make a law”. With that in mind perhaps the FAA should think twice about routing drones on flight paths that overfly Deer Creek.
The brightest blue dot in the picture is the earth. The picture was taken by the Cassini Probe while orbiting around the planet Saturn roughly 900,000,000 miles away. Courtesy of
This a picture of the Earth from the Messenger Probe which is orbiting around Mercury about 60 million miles away. You can clearly see the moon orbiting the Earth with roughly 200,000 miles between them.
Even though Facebook is a well recognized company it is really not that big or profitable yet Mrs. Sandberg was paid over $26 million last year.
I think it is a legitimate question to ask (I realize most of you don’t care but I’m annoyed that she makes so much for running a small company). Here is a woman that helps run a company (she isn’t even the ceo) that reported a little over billion dollars in pretax profit in 2012. The company isn’t really that big, it only employs about 3,000 people. Yet Sheryl Sandberg was paid over $26 million dollars last year. Well lets compare her to another famous executive for Ford. Alan Mulally is the ceo of Ford. His company reported over $5 billion in profit for 2012 and his company employs well over 200,000 people world-wide yet he was only paid roughly $21 million dollars. I realize she works for a well-recognized company that many of us use on a regular basis but you could say the same thing about Mulally. You could also say that Mulally was instrumental in saving the Ford Motor Vehicle Company from certain destruction. So what has Miss Sandberg done to justify her many millions in compensation? I have no problem paying top talent for delivering results but I just don’t see how she is worth more per year running a smaller company than Mulally while he also is generating more profit at a much bigger and more complex company.
“President Obama campaigned on gutting America’s missile defense, and he has kept his promise.”
Word accidentally leaked out today that the pentagon secretly assumed that North Korea does in fact have the capability of putting a nuke on a missile. This flies in the face of the myriad of statements by defense officials in the past that routinely dismissed the idea that North Korea had developed nuclear capable missiles. To say that this a complete game changer for America’s policy towards the rogue state is an understatement because now there is the very real possibility that North Korea could lob a missile to the west coast of the United States. Sadly, it also shows how little trust you can put in our elected officials. Remember, many of these same democrats running the pentagon and the Obama administration have been telling us for years that missile defense was a uneeded waste of tax payer dollars. I have no doubt that our missile defense programs have been executed in a completely inefficient fashion because that is par for the course for the pentagon because politicians secretly like it that way. Unfortunately just because it was developed in a wasteful manner does not mean it was not needed.
To be frank the Obama administration has done such a bad job of handling America’s missile defense that it has had to overrule its own reverse of the Bush administrations’ missile defense policy. Read this excerpt from a piece from www.forbes.com .
“The U.S. could have already had those 14 more interceptors in place, along with another 10 in Europe next year. The Bush administration deployed the first ground-based interceptor (GBI) in 2004, and had planned to deploy a total of 54. In 2009, Obama pulled the plug on that plan, and cut GBI deployment to just 30.”
To say that the Obama administration is incompetent on missile defense would be an understatement. The fact of the matter is that he and his administration are down right dangerous.
So the last few days have seen overwhelming evidence that China is the origin point for an obscene number of sophisticated cyber attacks against targets in the US. The fact that this is really nothing new begs the question why does China allow this to go on? The answer is simple really. First, it’s very lucrative for the Chinese to steal data that US companies have spent years researching. Second, they keep doing it because they have made the cold calculation that what ever penalty they might incur (so far that has only amounted in some short-term bad press) is not a strong enough reason to stop. In essence American weakness in the form of either no response or only complaining about it in the press has brought this problem from being one of an annoyance to the level of legitimate national security issue. What should be of most concern to the average American is that the US defense establishment seems so in capable of handling this problem. The fact that the US spends more money on defense than the next 10 nations combined (which if we get our money’s worth I’m generally in favor of) yet still hasn’t been able to craft a proper response to this issue should be of the gravest concern. This is one of those situations in life where the bully (China) will not stop unless we punch them back in the nose. With this in mind we should plan on our own massive cyber counter attack the next time the Chinese our caught red-handed for its pretty obvious that they won’t stop until they realize the that the cost is too high.
In closing, one other thing to keep in mind is that these cyber attacks are literally a dry run for what the opening phase of a stand-off with China would be like. For the Chinese have not only been caught stealing information they have also been caught playing around with critical US infrastructure like our electrical grid. There is only one reason to be doing something like that and that is to develop the capability to deliver a knock out blow if tensions ever heated up in the future. With this in mind clearly the time for the US to address this challenge is now. Because it is not just cyber attacks the Chinese have been perfecting. They have also flooded the US military’s supply chain with inferior, counterfeit, Chinese parts, and developed new Chinese weapon systems like the “Carrier Killer Missile” it is obvious that the China is planning for a future confrontation with America. The only question is whether or not America will even be up to the challenge.
In what can only be described as an injustice to the American tax payer Facebook has released its financial statement and has admitted that even though the company will make roughly 1.4 billion dollars in pre tax profit they mysteriously will not owe the federal government anything. How is this possible is the obvious question and the answer is of course accounting gimmicks. Facebook appears to accomplish this in two ways. First, the company is allowed to bank losses from prior years. In other words, lets say Facebook hypothetically had a loss of 400 million in 2011. Then the following year they made 1.4 billion. They would then be able to subtract that loss in 2011 from their pre tax profit in 2012. The second way is that Facebook does this is explained below.
” Companies like Facebook are allowed to treat the cost of non-cash compensation, such as stock options, as an expense that reduces profits, essentially the way they treat cash compensation such as salaries.
The difference is that Facebook—unlike, say, General Motors (GM)—relies heavily on stock options and restricted stock units as a form of compensation. It paid out a lot during its years as a private company that it must now recognize on its income statement and balance sheet”
The original story goes on to mention that Facebook will not only pay no federal tax on its billion dollar plus profit but will in fact receive over 4oo million dollars in tax refunds. To say this is absurd is an understatement. I guess this gives us an idea why our government is broke. If you think this unfair hit the like button, lol.
